The Plaza Mayor was constructed between 1729 and 1755 and is home to the town’s city hall, cafes, restaurants, a variety of shops and the most important place: the famous bullfighting grounds called the Arch of the Bull. The plazas pillar medallions are representative of the Historical Kings of Spain. When you first enter this plaza you will stand there with your mouth open in amazement because this is not only the most beautiful square in the city but also in all of Spain. Not only do the daily activities gravitate to this square but the night time ones do as well. In the evening there are musical groups called tunas that play outside the seating areas of the restaurants. Sometimes there are as many as three groups playing at different restaurants; it’s fun just to stop and listen to them for a while.

Salamanca is also home to a New Cathedral as well as an Old Cathedral. The New Cathedral was built between the 16th and 18th centuries: this cathedral was born out of need for a bigger and better place. As the cathedral was built over a long period of time there were different styles of architecture used in its construction. The important items that make up this cathedral are the fantastic wood carvings, Gothic style designs and of course the decorative medallions. Inside the cathedral you will find a golden chapel with carvings from the Romanesque period, there is also the Chapel of the Veil and the Chapel of Saint Roque which are rich and elegant. The designers of the cathedral are Anton de Egas and Alonso Rodriges, both of whom are responsible for the ultimate manifestation of Gothic architecture in Spain found in the New Cathedral.

The Old Cathedral also took a long time to build hence the different elements that went into its construction including Gothic and Romanesque features. The cathedral also has a tower that has become an important landmark in Salamanca. When you enter the cathedral you will see the paintings depicting the life of Mary and Jesus which are a treat within themselves to view. Salamanca’s patron saint is the Virgin of the Vega. The only way you can get to the Old Cathedral is through the New Cathedral so don’t waste your time looking for a main entrance to the old one.
